I was born and grew up in Sutton, a green leafy suburb of South London. I first met with visual arts in high school, where my art teacher urged me to develop my talent and pursue a career in art. Instead of doing this, I chose the aesthetics of engineering and went to university to study engineering.
In my early twenties I emigrated to Israel. Today, I live with my wife and five children in the town of Beit Shemesh, perched at the start of the Jerusalem foothills and work in software engineering.
I rediscovered painting in 2003 after a long break during which I had turned my artistic talents to photography, draftsmanship and software architecture. All my current work is in acrylics employing a free but realistic style that draws from impressionism.
About my work
Trained as an engineer, I came to art comparatively late as a way to return creativity to my life and respond to the beauty of the world around me.
I paint in acrylics in a free but realistic style that draws from impressionism. Most of my work depicts local scenes - landscapes, views of the timeless city of Jerusalem and the beauty of the land of Israel. I work almost exclusively from my own photographs - places and scenes that I have captured on film frozen, waiting to be revived in paint. I seek to revive the essence of the scene depicting depth, light and shade, and the richness of colors and textures.
We see many scenes and places in our lives or even every day. Each leaves on us an impression as we pass through or linger to soak up its atmosphere. I seek to depict this impression in my work.
My art for me is the crafting of a likeness of beauty inspired by a place or scene. Painting the scene is a kind of intimacy - of getting inside the scene, living it, recording its likeness and gaining a new experience of deeper acquaintance that I can take away and keep. I hope that you will be able to enjoy sharing this experience.
